The Heraldic Cloaks Of the Baron and Baroness of Illiton

These cloaks, or mantles, were made by the Barony of Shattered Crystal, and presented by Baroness Rowan Connor to Baron Gareth Thorne and Baroness Catherine Oakley on the list field at the Jubilee Olde English Faire in 2004, before the Sunday morning demonstration.

According to Baroness Alphia Biraz-Pars, former Baroness of Shattered Crystal, who provided much of the fabric, the founding Baroness of Illiton had been asked whether the Baron and Baroness had heraldic cloaks, and answered that Illiton had never had any, so Shattered Crystal's populace secretly determined to correct the problem!

The pattern for the Mermaid was drawn by Lord Pieter Van Der Eiken. The appliqué on one cloak was done by Baroness Alphia, and on the other, by Lady Yzabe de Rodez. The fabric for the Mermaid's hair started out as "a perfect texture" - but bright Royal blue in color. So they bleached it out and re-dyed it green. Other fabrics were also chosen for their texture as much as their color.
Cutout was done at meetings by Baron Philippe de Lyon and Lord Mircea. Actual construction of the cloaks was done mostly by Lady Yzabe, with hemming and hand-finishing assistance from several ladies at meetings.
The buttons for the straps were made by Liam Meyrick, Shattered Crystal's Arts and Sciences Champion at the time.
Pictures of the Cloaks will come soon
