The Baronial Thrones of Illiton

Baron's Throne

These thrones, based on the 14th - 17th century "Glastonbury Chair" design, were commissioned in February, 2004 by Master Charles Oakley for donation to the Barony.

They were made by Charles' apprentice Lord Rhys, Capten gen y Arain Lloer, from the Barony of Andelcrag, for whom Rhys had previously made similar thrones. Illiton's thrones were delivered during our Baronial Party in the Fallen Star camp at the Pennsic War in August 2004.

The thrones, made of white oak (with red oak dowels), differ from the historic Glastonbury Chair in that they break down into fewer pieces and are more easily reconstructed. These thrones are easily taken down and packed flat for transport. When fitted together in a specific way and pinned with wooden wedges, they are quite rigid and comfortable to sit in.
The storage bags were made by Baroness Catherine Oakley. There is a separate bag for each major piece and one for the wedges, all packed in one large bag for each throne.

The cushions were made from material donated by THL Georgia the Pragmatic and THL Pege Pendandohter, pieced together by the Illiton Sewing Guild. The seat cushions were finished by Lady Angela. The back cushions were finished by Baroness Catherine. (The heraldic embroidery is not yet complete.) Kneeler cushion covers made of a shell pattern matelasse are from the collection of Baroness Maria Teresa Ribeiro dos Santos.
Pictures of the Baroness' Throne will come soon
